Yiddish on the Continent

L’Institut d’Etudes du Judaïsme, a major European Centre for Jewish Studies, announces an intensive programme in Yiddish language and literature « Yiddish on the Continent » to be held from July 3rd to July 14th 2023.

The programme is designed to:
- introduce students to the Yiddish language, literature and culture
- enrich existant knowledge.

The summer programme offers students intensive language courses at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Language classes are predominantly conducted in Yiddish. The morning classes are complemented with a broad range of language enrichment activities including :
- Translation workshop with Gilles Rozier,
- Singing workshop with Shura Lipovsky,
- Theatre workshop with Annick Prime-Margules,
- Lectures on specialised subjects,
- Yiddish film,
- Concerts,
- Visits to Jewish sites (museum, synagogues, monuments).

Our teaching staff includes professors from Belgium, France, England and USA:
Helen BEER - University College, London - University of London (Levels 3 and 4).
Sonia DRATWA-PINKUSOWITZ - Institut d’Études du Judaïsme – ULB – Brussels (Levels 3 and 4).
Annick PRIME-MARGULES – Paris Yiddish Centre – Paris (Levels 1 and 2).
Sheva ZUCKER – YIVO Institute for Jewish Research; Workers Circle - New York City (Levels 1 and 2).

During the Seminar, the Institute will organize two exceptional concerts open to the public* in collaboration with La Maison de la Culture Juive.
Monday July 3 at 8 PM, Lorin Sklamberg (15€)
Tuesday July 11 at 8 PM, Shura Lipovsky, in trio with Marjolijn Van Roon and Lurie Morar (€15).
Reservations open from June 1st , 2023.
* The two concerts are included in the programme for participants in the Seminar


The cost for the two-week programme is 500 euros (or 400 euros for full-time university students).

As places are limited, only applications with full payment will ensure participation in the programme.

Scholarships
With the support of the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe, the Institute for Jewish Studies offers scholarships to students between 18 and 30 years, who wish to participate in the Yiddish University in Brussels.
Scholarships are available, covering the registration fee (400 €).
